When selecting a contractor look for a rapport. Is he/she professional, punctual and respectful? Does he/she communicate effectively? Does he/she have industry knowledge and experience?
According to the State of California Contractors Board:
- Hire only Licensed Contractors
- Check the contractor’s license status and history at www.cslb.ca.gov or by calling 1-800-321-CSLB (2752)
- Get at least three references and review past work
- Review insurance, workman’s compensation and general liability. Make sure they are up-to-date.
- Be sure the contractor has experience - and most importantly - specializes in the work you want performed
- Be willing to provide a detailed description of the scope of work
- Contractor will guarantee the work
- All verbal Contractor representations are in writing
- A fair agreed upon deposit up front
- Final payment not required until work is complete
